PM confirms exit from EU single market

We’re now getting a clearer picture of how Britain intends to leave the EU. Prime Minister Theresa May is choosing a hard exit. She says she will seek a complete withdrawal.

May outlined her government’s strategy, setting out 12 negotiating objectives in her much-anticipated Brexit speech. She said she will pursue a “bold and ambitious” free trade agreement with the EU. And she emphasized wanting to regain control of migration from Europe.

-The message from the public before and during the referendum campaign was clear. Brexit must mean control of the number of people who come to Britain from Europe. And that is what we will deliver.

She had suggested she might seek to maintain access to the single market while restricting immigrants. But EU leaders have said Britain won’t be allowed to cherry-pick parts of the EU it wants to keep.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has defended the plan to leave the EU single market, a day after giving a speech that outlined Britain’s exit strategy.

It won’t necessarily damage the EU, but it would certainly damage this country-business, jobs and public service.

-One of the key principles, the key objectives, is that we negotiate a free trade agreement with the European Union that gives us the widest possible access for trading with and operating within the European Union.

May stressed that the impact on British companies and employment will be minimized.
