Italy’s PM to resign after losing referendum
Italy’s prime minister has announced he will resign, after suffering a big loss in a referendum over his plan to reform the constitution. Matteo Renzi spoke to the nation as the result was still being tallied. The referendum asked whether the country’s upper chamber of parliament should be stripped of some of its powers. The country’s government has been hamstrung by procedure and delays to legislation.
Renzi argued that the reforms would help stabilize the country’s politics and make it more competitive. But the anti-establishment, populist Five Star Movement has criticized the proposals, saying that change would have led to a concentration of power. Its leader and comedian Beppe Grillo welcomed the vote results. His party has called for opposing the government’s austerity policies as well as the euro currency. Experts have raised concerns about whether a defeat in Italy’s referendum would have broader ramifications for Europe, as countries like France see growing right-wing populist movements.
