ASEAN’s 10 member countries are expected to spend 58 billion dollars on new military gear over the next five years, and much of it is expected to be used in the South China Sea. China has reclaimed small islands and reefs there and has built airfields and port facilities. The country is claiming almost all of the resource-rich waters as its own.

U.S. defense officials are accusing their counterparts in Beijing of ratcheting up tensions in the South China Sea. They’re criticizing China for landing a military plane on a runway built in the Spratly Islands. Chinese officials say the aircraft touched down Sunday on a 3,000-meter runway they built in the Fiery Cross Reef. They say it was on a humanitarian mission to transport sick workers. But U.S. officials say there’s no obvious reason to use a military aircraft for that purpose, and they believe it’s the first time a military plane has landed there. The U.S. Department of Defense is urging China to reaffirm that there is no plan to deploy military aircraft in the Spratlys. China is building two other runways of similar length in the area.
